EF ultra wide zooms and pizza
Lunch with photobloggers - this is what happens when the food comes. Everyone starts taking pictures of: the food in front of them, the food next to them and probably the person next to them taking a photo of their food. (above photo with Canon EF24mm F2.8)
Amy and I met up with some of the Sydney photobloggers at The Sydney Camera Market in Ultimo. I was hoping to find a good deal on a second hand Canon EF 17-40 F4.0L or a (discontinued) EF 17-35 F2.8L. I found a F2.8 and while it wasn't dirt cheap (1300) it was in pretty good condition. The 'thing' is - this lens has a pretty bad reputation. It's not meant to be very sharp - particularly wide open and this is rumoured to be why Canon rather quickly replaced it with the (way expensive) EF16-35 F2.8. The guy selling this 17-35 was kind enough to let me put it on my 10d and snap of a few shots. They are basically boring photos, so I won't be posting them. I shot it at 2.8, 3.5 and 4.0 - I'm not really sure about the F4.0 shot, it seems soft but was also taken at 1/30 of a second so that could be camera shake. The F2.8 shot on the other hand was at 16mm and 1/100th of a second - should be no camera shake. I really didn't expect to see a noticeably soft image but there it was - it's just... soft. A few tables down was a guy selling a 17-40 and I was again able take a few frames - this time all at F4.0 and while these are again terribly boring photos but they are clearly sharper than the 16-35. So in my totally unscientific comparison of the (discontinued) Canon EF 17-35/2.8L lens and the EF 16-40/4.0L lens, the f4.0 lens comes out on top. Too bad the used one at the markets was priced higher than new lenses available on line.
I just checked out the 16-35 v 17-35 comparison at The Luminous Landscape - the softness I saw in my 2.8 test is similar to the softness in his tests. With this confirmation, my choice is clear - as much as I want F2.8 - I'd rather the sharper lens.

the towing paparazzi
no gaggle of photographers - just me and the TV crew - the Channel 9 studio is less than 1 km from here. There are several more photos of the various automobiles that the bus took out on its way to the footpath to the left. Fortunatly no one was injured. While I was shooting, a lady asked me if I would take photos of her car for her insurance. I obliged (many of those are rather dull, but I did post a couple on flickr.)

Glenbrook Skate Park
This wasn't my destination in the Blue Mountains. I actually got lost after forgetting to bring a map. Fortunately, 90% of the roads up there are either dead ends or lead to back to the highway. So I gave up, headed back to Sydney but not before stopping at the Glenbrook Skate Park. There were about 20 kids there and they were kind enough to let me shoot some photos. I've been wanting to give skateboarding a go (as a photo subject) and was surprised and just how much speed these guys get. Tried a lot of different things - overall I'm not thrilled about the sharpness of most of them - I was using the 10d's AI Focus mode - next time I'll use continuous.
The rest of the photos are in my Glenbrook skate park set over on flickr - and I told a few of the kids who asked, how to google their way to my site. Guys - if you are here, thanks for letting me get in your way. Please feel free to give me some names to go with the photos on flickr.

lo us
This car is always covered and parked down the street from our place. It was windy today and while walking home I notice the cover blew off (it is out of veiw, but sort hanging on to the tires on the other side.) I always thought it was an MG - turns out, it's a Lo us.

Melbourne Cup
I'm not really a betting man. I mean, I was married in Vegas and fed a few quarters into a few slot machines while I was there. And sure, I've purchased the occasional lotto ticket - I've even been to the horse races in person (like about 15 years ago) but Melbourne Cup Day is different - nearly everyone in Australia stops whatever they are doing to watch the 3:00 race on the first Tuesday of November. Every office has a sweeps and since we all get together to watch the race, well heck it's just a bunch of horses if you don't have any money on it. This year I lucked into the favourite in the $5.00 sweep - and since Makybe Diva did in fact win the race - I won $70.00 - woo! hoo! - that's going right into the 17-40 F4.0L fund!
