climbing hand
photo byGadgetgirl - the hand, is mine
Looks painful, I know but wasn't too bad. Two side effects of rock climbing - a mashed up wedding ring and the aftermath of a dreaded 'flapper' (when a callus comes off and the bit of skin is sort of flapping in the breeze) - the odd thing about the scar of course is that it's shaped like Australia.
So climbing update: outdoors the weather just isn't cooperating - with any luck it won't rain tonight - rained last weekend and is meant to rain again tonight - but indoors things are going all right. Took my first lead in about 6 years last weekend - I was nervous leading up to it but once I got on the wall things felt perfectly normal. I don't know how 'hard' the route was so I still can't really judge where I am on my "grade 24 by Australia day 2008" goal but it was a jug haul up a slightly overhanging wall (about 7 meters I guess to the ceiling) and then headed out the ceiling another 10 meters or so. The first go I had to hang on the rope once - but not until the second last bolt - and mostly just because I had my hands reversed and couln't reach the last hold. After the hang I sorted the move and completed the climb. Like I said, it felt perfectly natural and on Tuesday night I did the same climb clean but the above happened.

Melbourne, F1 and Crumplers
Friday was a day trip to our Melbourne office, which is located only a few hundred meters from Albert Park where the Melbourne Grand Prix is run - and for the non-race fans out there, last weekend was the GP weekend in Melbourne. In the office, we could hear the cars practicing.
I was in the market for a new laptop bag so after work I headed over the the Crumpler Custom Shop in Fitzroy. Long time readers will know that I had a Crumpler 7 Million Dollar Home Camera bag modified by them back in 2005 (added a Quick Flick Buckle to the strap) and while I could have gone to the Melbourne CBD shop it was a short taxi ride to Fitzroy and I just had to go. I was back and fort between the Considerable Embarrassment and The Part and Parcel. The former bag was a tight fit for my notebook (but it did fit) and the later was much more padded and overall just a bigger bag. The nice shop assistant was pointing out the quick flick buckle and I mentioned the mod I had done to my camera bag and she said "Oh, so you're Rob" - seems I'm famous :) or possibly infamous... She went on to tell me that someone had come into the shop asking for the quick flick mod on their camera bag - seen on my site - but alas, Crumpler doesn't do them any more...
I ended up getting The Considerable Embarassment. I'll review it soon.
