bouldering on palm beach

Amy's photo of me bouldering at Palm Beach today. An interesting day really - i wasn't really into it this morning. Weather wasn't looking too good but we drove up to Palm Beach none the less. Things looked good there - the boulders are literally right on the beach so the landings looked nice and safe (reminder to the non-climbing readers - bouldering is climbing small boulders without ropes - low level stuff.) The rock was great! really solid sandstone and just felt perfect. Warmed up on some of the easier problems and then started working the 'classic' traverse - severely overhanging on huge holds. The crux section took at least a half dozen attempts (great spotting Tim!) and as some threatening rain clouds started moving in I managed to send it. Felt great. Technically speaking, the problem (V3 for the climbers reading this) is about as hard as the more difficult stuff I was climbing back in 1995. Feels good to be getting my grove back.

Easter climbing in Nowra

Tim cleaning Jessy Fetch 13 on Easter Sunday.

We managed to dodge the showers in Nowra this weekend and had two half days of climbing. I lead three climbs - two majorly sandbagged grade 11 climbs, a 13 and top-roped a 16. Amy got a nice shot of me on a second lap on Uncle Udfuddy (one of the so called 11s.) I'm still getting my outdoor confidence back - I'll start pushing myself on lead when I'm ready and this weekend wasn't it. While it was nice to get out of the city, I never really got my head out of work - I think mostly because I'm off to Malaysia and Singapore for the rest of the week. I'm certainly not looking forward to the two days (Good Friday and Easter Monday) of email waiting for me when I log back into the work network. I'm really forcing myself not to log in tonight :)

gone climbin'

Amy posted a video of me top roping 'Look Blue Go Purple' (18 or 5.9) at Berowra last weekend.

We expect to be doing much more climbing this weekend - heading to Nowra tonight and if the rain holds back tomorrow should be a full day. Monday looks to be better weather wise - so worst case we'll just get a day of climbing rather than two... fingers crossed - Happy Easter!

real rock

finally the weather cooperated and we got out on some real rock. My first outdoor lead in 6 years - Taylor Made (15, 5.6) - and I got to admit I was pretty nervous about it. During the climb I could feel my heart beating really hard and fast but I was focused and did the climb "on-sight." Amy, Tim and I spent the better part of the morning top roping it (they both did it three times and both managed a clean ascent - that's Amy topping out on it.)

After the nerves of the first lead I opted to top rope the neighboring climb - Look Blue Go Purple (18, 5.9) - I'll be able to lead that next time... did it three times on top rope.

Easter weekend we are heading down to Nowra where there's a high concentration of low grade routes.
