0743_Climbing-Mt-YorkCopyright Damon Smith Damon was kind enough to allow me to post a few photos he took of me climbing a couple weekends ago. This is one of the grade 21 climbs I was working on in the Blue Mountains (actually this is both of the climbs as this one section is shared - there's two different starts but, well that's not the reason for this post.) I'm taking the next few weeks off climbing. I'm heading to America - I'll spend some time with Amy and her family before we head to my sister's wedding in Seattle. After that I'm brining Amy back to Australia. We settle on our new house and there's renovations and moving and well, a whole heck of a lot to do. I'll still send a 23 or better by my 40th.

Murdoch video

Getting closer to my climbing goals for 2008. The last two weekends I've been focused on climbs in the 20-22 range - building a solid 'pyramid' for my push to 24. Last Saturday in the Blue Mountains I red pointed (climbed clean on lead after rehearsing the moves) a 21 called 'Lady Grinning Soul' and followed that with a failed on sight of the 21 'Hang on to Yourself' (but i did manged a clean top rope of it - I'll red point it next time I'm there) Yesterday in Nowra I on sighted 'Beavis' (20) after warming up on 'Butt Head' just next to it - lol. Later I had a shot at on sighting the 22 'Murdoch the Horsef*r' - I fell trying to sort out the first moves off the top of the starting boulder... once i figured those out I did get to the top with one rest. The second attempt was captured on video above... have a watch if you're interested in my very vocal climbing style - someone once told me "if you're grunting you're breathing" and that's stuck with me...

bouldering on palm beach

Amy's photo of me bouldering at Palm Beach today. An interesting day really - i wasn't really into it this morning. Weather wasn't looking too good but we drove up to Palm Beach none the less. Things looked good there - the boulders are literally right on the beach so the landings looked nice and safe (reminder to the non-climbing readers - bouldering is climbing small boulders without ropes - low level stuff.) The rock was great! really solid sandstone and just felt perfect. Warmed up on some of the easier problems and then started working the 'classic' traverse - severely overhanging on huge holds. The crux section took at least a half dozen attempts (great spotting Tim!) and as some threatening rain clouds started moving in I managed to send it. Felt great. Technically speaking, the problem (V3 for the climbers reading this) is about as hard as the more difficult stuff I was climbing back in 1995. Feels good to be getting my grove back.

gone climbin'

Amy posted a video of me top roping 'Look Blue Go Purple' (18 or 5.9) at Berowra last weekend.

We expect to be doing much more climbing this weekend - heading to Nowra tonight and if the rain holds back tomorrow should be a full day. Monday looks to be better weather wise - so worst case we'll just get a day of climbing rather than two... fingers crossed - Happy Easter!

"Fear and Loathing III" 5.12a (25) march 1995

I forgot I had these negatives. Jim Horst took the photos - this was my first time on Fear and Loathing III - I was back in 1996 on lead but haven't managed a clean lead assent of any 5.12a - yet...

house on the rock self

house on the rock self
The House on the Rock was mentioned on Boing Boing and it reminded me of a few photos taken there back in 2002. You can see the confusion building in my face and this was early on in the visit. Next time you are in Southern Wisconsin, be sure to visit The House on the Rock - you can't miss the signs.

Sydney Photoblogger Meetup

I met up with the Sydney photobloggers group at The Art Gallery of New South Wales on Saturday. I photographed my self above with James who organised the meet. This was actually the first time I've been to the AGNSW and came away from it impressed with both the collection and the space (it really reminded me of a miniature Art Institute of Chicago in terms of the architecture.) I saw and liked a lot of Australian artists that I hadn't previously seen (I didn't note the artists' names, but will next time I promise.)

This was also my first big outing with the new Crumpler bag. It performed as well as I had expected - easy in and out, nice big strap and shoulder pad. The Department posted a great photo of my bag hard at work while I was having a long look at some art.

The rest of the photos are on flickr

new crumpler bag, sahra and me

new crumpler bag, sahra and meThat's Sahra from Crumpler who modded a Seven Million Dollar Home bag (also pictured) for me (again, also pictured.) As you may have read here a couple of weeks ago, I dig the new style camera bags from Crumpler. They're less structured (not so boxy) then the older bags (like my Tallee) but have a more traditional camera bag type of a strap. I rang the custom Crumpler shop in Melbourne and Sahra here said "no worries!" (she is Australian after all) and for an extra 10 bucks Aussie, I got the old style strap. Now, I just need to get a 430EX and a 17-40F4.0L to fill this bad boy up!

More photos of the bag loaded with gear coming soon..

Thank You Sahra and all the fine people at Crumpler!!

go-kart birthday

That's me at Eastern Creek Karts where Amy took my for my birthday. The 9hp karts were a lot of work to get around the track. It's a surprisingly physical activity - but heaps of fun.

Whitewater Rafting

We had a corporate outing yesterday to the Penrith Whitewater Stadium (built for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.) I don't have an underwater housing, so I left the camera at home - there were a handful of cameras there and one of my colleagues grabbed this photo of me NOT white water rafting. See the raft to the left; the one that's upside down? That would be ours. See the guy in the water; getting pulled to shore with a rope? That would be me. And I had an absolute blast!
